Learning, Writing and Reading for Women in Rural Zones of Kosovo

Prishtina, 15.1.2009. From August 2008 to January 2009, "Women for Women international" in Kosovo, with financing from dvv international (ARrK), implemented a project in which 184 women in rural areas in Kosovo learned reading and writing.

Illiteracy is still a disturbing matter for the Kosovan society. According to the reports of some international organizations (UNDP) illiteracy is widespread mostly among women in rural zones of Kosovo. Even though there is no census it is supposed that 14 per cent of females from rural areas are illiterate. Discrimination in education of women in the family continues to remain a worrisome factor as many girls do not attend the primary education so there is a chance that this phenomenon is even more widespread.

The Organization "Women for Women International" in Kosovo operates since 2000 with marginalized females from rural and urban areas of Kosovo.

In the outset of the work of GpGI-K it has been identified that the problem of illiteracy among females has soared from 20%, 40% in Podujevë, and even at 80% in Dubravë of Ferizaj.
This joint project implemented by GpGI-K and financed by ARrK (DVV International), aims at decreasing the level of illiteracy among females especially in rural areas of Kosovo.

Some 184 females from these regions were included in the project who attended classes at levels I – IV of primary education – writing and reading and basic mathematics.

Programme “The Window of Life” has been used during the classes. This programme is approved by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology which besides others contains reading and writing lessons and basic mathematics.
