dvv international in Bulgaria, 2001-2009

dvv international worked with its own local office in Bulgaria from 2001 to 2009. With respect to Bulgaria's EU accession in 2007, activities in this country were gradually reduced from 2007 and ended officially in 2009, following the concept that after several years of support by dvv international local structures should be enabled to continue working independently. A spin-off of dvv international's activities in Romania is SOVB (Society for Adult Education in Bulgaria, see below)

National and Regional Office

The project "Adult Education in Bulgaria" was part of a large scale project called "Strengthening of the local and regional Adult Education establishments - helping the stability in Southeast Europe", implemented by dvv international. The project was financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

dvv international started working with Bulgarian partners in 1994. The Project Office in Sofia opened in 2000.

Sofia became also the seat of the dvv international's Regional Office for South East Europe which had the task to coordinate the activities in the region. In 2007, the the Regional moved to Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegowina.

Focus of activities in Bulgaria

  • Creation and development of general and vocational adult education provision
  • Implementation of European standards of certification in computing and foreign languages
  • Curriculum development and training of trainers
  • Structural support for providers: inservice training in organizational development and purchasing
  • Expansion and promotion of continuing education advice centers
  • Advice to ministries on enshrining lifelong learning in legislation
  • Cooperation over educational provision for marginalized groups of the population: support with design and funding of measures for the unemployed, ethnic minorities and the disabled.

Continuing work in Bulgaria

Several partner organisations are continuing work in Bulgaria. One important spin-off is the Society for Adult Education in Bulgaria, SOVB (Sdruženie "Obrazovanie na văzrastni v  Bălgarija").
